We have spoken on social media before about Low VOC or more importantly, Zero VOC Paints. After doing more research into the subject, it feels like almost a matter of urgency for us to demystify the subject.
Did you know that studies suggest that 70% of the toxins that you absorb into your body is via the air that you breathe? A shocking 8% is from what you eat or drink, yet that is all we hear about.
Taking you back to my personal journey, I was fit and healthy but constantly trying every diet under the sun to find a way to loose belly fat. That day changed when I found out I had numerous intolerances but it was not enough for me to cut out certain foods for the rest of my life, I wanted to know how it was caused and what preventative measures I could do to fix this.
During my research I looked into numerous ways to heal your gut, then found out more about your skin being your ‘second’ gut and how the chemicals you put on your skin can have lasting damaging effects too. Looking further, there are studies that show some people are more sensitive to pollution, so much so that the moment they moved to the country, people that had been ‘trying’ for years were instantly becoming pregnant after removing themselves from a toxic environment. This goes the same for stress and other toxicities.
And this got my mind ticking… not everyone can move to the countryside, in fact of we all did, we would be making another city.
WHAT CAN WE DO TO MAKE OUR SPACES HEALTHIER?
Apart from the basics – fresh air, plants, more natural light and so on, there is not a lot of easily accessible information out there. [Hence starting this blog]
This is when I came across Low or Zero VOC paints.
VOCs, otherwise known as Volatile Organic Compounds are harmful chemicals that are commonly found in paints, solvents and cleaning chemicals. VOCs emit toxins into the air, leading to short and long term health affects such as headaches, brain fog, dizziness, asthma, nausea and are even linked to cancer of the lungs and bladder.
Now here’s the scary thing – most people have heard of leaving a room to air out for a couple of days before living in it. But did you know VOCs are emitted from paint for up to 7 years!!!
Most of us would repaint within the 7 years too so it leads us to be set up breathing in harmful chemicals almost indefinitely.
The average person spends over 90% of their time within their work and home environment.
Needless to say, from this day forward we will never pick up a tin of paint without ZERO VOC clearly stated on the label!
SO THE IMPORTANT PART – WHERE DO YOU GET ZERO VOC PAINT?
Ecolour has a range of interior and exterior paint, also some timber finishes, that are all Zero VOC. Alongside a 10 year guarantee, Ecolour is 100% Australian owned and manufactured and the best replacement for flat interior wall paints.
Rockcote have two zero VOC paints made from either lime or clay, they make up part of their Natural Materials collection. This uneven tone is really popular in paint techniques today with all the benefits of a using natural, VOC-free paint.
They also have a Low VOC and non-toxic range called Eco Style which prove very popular. The range is GECA certified to APAS standards and comes with a 15 year warranty so it has well and truely deserved it’s place within the market.
Not all of Porter’s Original Paints are Zero VOC however they have a small range that are and they do not disappoint. For those that are interested in some alternative, textured paints, look out for their Inferno Lime Wash, Lime Wash, Milk Paint or Boncote Cement Paint.
Porter’s Paints Milk Paint are a work of art in themselves with their chalky appearance. Perfect for rustic beach house or country style.
