There are so many ways that we can talk ourselves into buying an item so here are a few quick ways to talk yourself out of being a consumer.
>> Do I really want/need it?
Leave the shop, if you really want it, you will remember it and come back. Sleep on it if you can.
>> Can I really afford it?
Do your financials – Your wage after tax, rent and bills – no credit cards – can you afford to buy this item? Do you need to wait? Is it worth the wait?
>> Has it been worth my time?
A biggie – once you have worked out your financials … your income minus savings, rent, food, bills etc
Now working out what you have left, divide it by the number of hours you worked,
How many HOURS do you really have to do to afford that item…. Do you really want it now?
if you spend:
If $30 an hour – your spending income is ONLY $9 per hour!
Even scarier, if the item you want is $99 – that means this is 11 hours of work for you to afford
Now has it REALLY been worth your time?
At the end of the day, if you really want or need the item, you will buy it but as you all know, I am quite anti-consumerist. Yes, I get fed up of my clothes that I’ve worn for years upon years and not often, but I have over-indulged from time to time, (More so on food than anything else) but do my choices change the quality of my life? Yes! It makes it better… Less stress about credit card bills, what you wear AND more life experiences. It’s a no-brainer really!
